4:00p – 5:00pWORKSHOP with Donna Hébert
Louis Beaudoin – crooked tunes in D tuning

Louis Beaudoin was one of the major tradition-bearers of Franco-American fiddling. Donna spent a lot of time with him in the 1970s and his playing informed her Franco fiddling style. These two tunes are from his repertoire.

La Grande Gigue Simple – with transcription of his Philo 2022 recording and an mp3 from that recording.

La grondeuse – transcription and an mp3 from Donna’s In Full Bloom recording. She plays both tunes in a fiddle duet with André Brunet.

4:00p – 5:00pWorkshop with Joel Savoy and Gina Forsyth

Using a tune from the late Cajun fiddler Wade Frugé, we’ll learn a melody in two different octaves in the same key. This will give us an opportunity to not only learn a new tune and another kind of old-timey Cajun backup fiddling (playing a low melody in unison with a high melody), but it will provide us with a good exercise to study arpeggio ”shapes,” chords, relationships of the strings to eachother, and how it all connects. We’ll be in standard violin tuning.

4:00p – 5:15pWorkshop with David & Caitlin Romvedt: Basque Music in the Eighth Province
The Basque Country has seven provinces in Europe and and an eighth that is all the Basque people in the Americas. In this workshop David Romtvedt and Caitlin Belem will present and teach a few widely played tunes that are shared by all eight provinces with a focus on the Basque community in the Northern Rockies. When the accordion was introduced in the 1860s it largely drove the fiddle out of dance music. We are delighted to be part of the reintroduction of the fiddle to the music and to the traditions of fiddle and button accordion player together. We’ll focus on fandangos and arins—the two most common dances—and on a song or two.

A mini-workshop on W.E. Claunch’s 1939 recording of “Grub Springs.” I play the tune, talk about its tuning (ADAE!), style, and bowing; break down a slowed-version of the original; show the fingering; and then finally play the entire slowed-down original recording, so you can geek out on it too!
